Adding videos and slide shows

Nota Bene: If you add a slide show or video to a blog, remember to format the text as 10 point Verdana before you copy the text from Word to the website.

ADDING A SLIDE SHOW

The Place and Literature website has a feature that makes it easy to add a slide show. Just go to create content>slideshow, and give the show a title, select the course and topic, write some introductory content, and under “Images,” start uploading your images. Remember to click on “attach” after you’ve chosen the image on your computer. The slide show will appear among the blogs for the course and topic you selected. This is a “manual” slide show that requires the user to advance the slides by clicking on the “next” button; if you want to make a fancier, automatic slide show with lots of theming features, try out the Slide website.

EMBEDDING SLIDE SHOWS IN THE WEBSITE

  1. Create the slide show in Slide. The instructions for doing this are on the Slide website.
  2. When you get to the “save get code” stage, you’ll see a list of website platforms on the left, starting with MySpace. Click on “FreeWebs” in the More section. Then “copy the code” that appears in the box.
  3. On the Place and Literature website, create content>blog, and type in an introduction to the slide show. (Don’t write a lot. If you want to do a blog post on a subject related to the slide show, do it in a separate post.)
  4. Disable rich text, as if you were going to insert an image, and then paste in the Slide code.
  5. Under “rich text” you’ll see “Input format”: change the format from “Standard format” to “Full html.”
  6. Do NOT click on “preview.” (This is important.) Go directly to “ submit,” and you should see the slideshow in your blog.
  7. If you have to go back to edit the post, the HMTL code for embedding the post (and probably all the text you wrote as well) will disappear and you’ll have to start the whole process over—go back to Slide and get the code, paste into your blog, etc.
  8. After you post the slide show, you can actually go back to Slide and make changes in the show—change the theme, the speed, add music, etc.—and these changes will show up automatically in your blog presentation of the slide show. You do not need to re-do the copy & paste of the embed code.

EMBEDDING YOUTUBE VIDEOS IN THE WEBSITE

  1. In YouTube, when you’re looking at a video, on the right side you’ll see a box with “About this video” and within it a box called “Embed” with some HTML code in it. Copy this code.
  2. On the Place and Literature website, create content>blog, and type in a very brief introduction to the YouTube video. (Don’t write a lot. If you want to do a blog post on a subject related to the video, do it in a separate post.)
  3. Disable rich text, as if you were going to insert an image, and then paste in the You-tube embed code.
  4. Under “rich text” you’ll see “Input format”: change the format from “Standard format” to “Full html.”
  5. Do NOT click on “preview.” (This is important.) Go directly to “ submit,” and you should see the video in your blog.
  6. If you have to go back to edit the post, the HMTL code for embedding the post (and probably all the text you wrote as well) will disappear and you’ll have to start the whole process over—go back to You-tube and get the code, paste into your blog, etc.
